Questions and Answers about Donating Horses
Posted 3909-05-06
Foreword: I've posted the most commonly asked questions about my horse donation program and my anwers below. Please contact me if you have any further questions and thank you for visiting my website. Sincerely, Debbie Davis Question: Where do the donated horses come from and why are they donated? What do you do with them after they arrive?
Answer:
People contact me to donate horses from a variety of circumstances. I take horses I approve for my program more than outright rescuing the homeless horse although I often consider the horses I take rescued from lifestyles and occupations no longer benefiting to them and give them the opportunity to have a more productive life. Sometimes the owners simply cannot afford or do not wish to continue paying the bills and have tried unsuccessfully to sell them. Sometimes they don’t have the time or interest in marketing their own horses with all the hassles and difficulty that can entail. Some inquire about consignment selling but when they factor in the cost of board, training and commission they realize they are better off donating in this buyers market and letting me incur the risks of recouping the expenses. I get daily referrals from owners, buyers and sellers for my appraisal, training and placement services. I place on average of one horse a week and have a high volume of buyer traffic coming through my farm continuously. My program differs from most horse rescues that take the lame, sick and senior horses. My program focuses on bridging the gap between what buyers are actively looking for and the multitude of unwanted horses with potential. It’s a springboard training facility that gives horses a second chance. All horses accepted have to be healthy and at least serviceably sound for their intended use. I take all breeds and types of horses and ponies and work them in the discipline best suited for that individuals temperament, conformation and general aptitude.
